Large area in Hout Bay affected by burst water pipe inside cemetery

A burst on a 300mm diameter pipe inside the cemetery in Hout Bay has left a large area without water. The City’s Water and Sanitation maintenance team, along with a contractor, has been addressing the water disruption since yesterday afternoon. Upon inspection, the team discovered three bursts in the pipe along the Main Road, inside the cemetery.
To facilitate repairs, the water supply from the Hout Bay Reservoir was shut off, causing the network to empty and leaving a large area without water: Baviaanskloof, Mount Rhodes, Suikerbossie, Ruyterplaats, Park Road, Riverside Terrace, Park Avenue, Princess Street and the lower parts of Imizamo Yethu.
Residents are kindly requested to keep their taps closed during this period to prevent water loss or damage when the supply is restored.
‘The repair process is challenging due to the pipe's difficult location, and the team must work carefully to avoid damaging the graves. An excavator is on site to help access the leaks, after which repairs will begin,’ said Councillor Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation.
Water tankers will provide water for domestic use during this period as follows:
• A water tanker will be stationed at Mount Rhodes.
• A second tanker will be at the Shell Garage.
• Additional tankers are being sourced and residents will be informed of their locations once they are dispatched.
